Yesterday we launched our food drive. One of our New Year's Resolutions is to help fight childhood obesity and childhood hunger. The students of Room 19 are collecting the following breakfast items since that seems to be the biggest need in our community at this point: low sugar cereal (6 grams of sugar or less), oatmeal, pancake mix (add water only) and small PLASTIC bottles of syrup. We have already received a few donations! There will be a box set up next to the display case by the entrance to the school. Thanks for your help!
Happy new year! 2013 is going to be an exciting year. We will start by learning more about visualization, a reading comprehension strategy. We are learning about it through daily read-alouds. We are also learning how to write descriptive pieces to paint a picture in the readers' mind. Students have written winter landscape descriptions, will swap with another classmate, and illustrate them so we can see how someone else visualizes our description. Reviewing the short vowel sounds, studying non-fiction text features, and learning the difference between fact and opinion will be other language arts areas we will cover in January. Room 19 has embarked on a journey to learn about each other's stories of family heritage, tradition and culture. Our resident artist, L'Ana Burton, starts in two weeks. She will deepen our study through dance. In math, we are learning about groups of tens and extras and are becoming familiar with solid and plane shapes in geometry.
